Here is a breakdown into 5 stages of painting for this acrylic on canvas. The Size 70 cm x 50 cm (27. 5 in. x 19.5 in). The title of the painting is El golfo, Lanzazrote. It was painted in 2007.

The stages (from left to right and top to bottom) :

Stage 1.
Here I loosely laid down an underpainting on top of the sketch to bring out the the basic forms and texture. The colors of the underpainting will later show through in places, giving the painting a unified mood.
The main colors used were Cadmium yellow, cadmium orange, burnt sienna and raw umber.

Stage 2
I started putting in some deeper color in the mid- ground rock and the far hills, and a few lights on the water.
Colrs used : Cadmium orange, cadmium red, Zinc white, and Ultramarine blue (on the waves)

Stage 3
Started on the blues for the sky and sea, and got some more detail on the rock and hills, and start ing on the reflection of the rock in the water, trying to stay loose.
Notice how the yellows and oranges show through in the sky,
Colors : Prussian blue, ultramarine blue, cadmium orange, cadmium yellow, white.

Stage 4
Worked on the rock and hiils, getting the shapes to come out with smooth transitions og light and dark.

Stage 5
With much concentration, reworked the sea to obtain the right feeling. Also modified the waterline along the front of the rock, which was giving a to much of feeling of tilt to the rock-

Finished the sky, still leaving the the underpainting showing through in places
